Ryerson offering relief to students experiencing food insecurity

May 04, 2020

We understand that COVID-19 has upended the lives of Ryerson students, with many experiencing a loss of income and unexpected costs that are challenging to bear in this uncertain time. In times of financial stress, we recognize that students may be required to make difficult decisions around their finances, including skipping meals or purchasing lower quality and nutrient-poor food items to offset costs.

To help address this challenge, Ryerson Food Services has entered into a partnership with Meal Exchange (external link)  to support Ryerson students in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) experiencing food insecurity. Through this program, Ryerson will be providing free biweekly food boxes to students in need from organizations like FoodShare (external link)  and 100km Foods Inc (external link) . This initiative is possible due to Ryerson’s commitment of $27,000 to support students experiencing food insecurity.

Overview of Ryerson’s food insecurity program

Participating students living in the GTA will receive biweekly food boxes delivered to their door, free of charge while funds last. A sample of the food boxes that will be delivered to students is available on the FoodShare website (external link) .

Sign up for Ryerson’s food insecurity program

Ryerson students experiencing food insecurity may apply for free food support by completing the  (google form) COVID-19 Food Support for Ryerson Students form (external link) . Space in the program is limited and is first come, first served.

Once the COVID-19 Food Support for Ryerson Students form is completed, students will be contacted by Meal Exchange staff to arrange for delivery of these free food boxes.

All student information collected is confidential and will not be shared outside of Ryerson Food Services and Meal Exchange.
